1.  AXIS Database of 20th Century Artists

AXIS is a visual arts service that provides information about artists, craftspeople and makers living/working in Britain.  It hosts the only national register of contemporary British artists, and is available at http://www.axisartists.org.uk/ at no charge.  [This is possible with grant aid from Arts Councils of England, Wales and Scotland, Yorkshire, Eastern, South West, South East and Northern Arts Boards in addition to the Joint Information Systems Committee.]

To try a fun search to see how AXIS works, go to the AXIS website at http://www.axisartists.org.uk/, enter the website, choose 'AXIS database online' in the left frame, scroll down till you see 'Click here to begin searching the AXIS database online', and do a quick search for MARTIAN. 
Great fun!!  There are some very talented artists in Britain.

2.  Eurotext

A unique teaching and learning resource providing easy access to key European Union full-text documents.  The helpful thing about this service is that there are value-added tools to help you in actually locating relevant texts.  (This is no easy feat with EU texts!)  Best of all both those texts available from the EU currently, and historical texts no longer available from EU websites are included.  Access is by institutional subscription.  Costs begin at £350 p.a. and more information is available at http://eurotext.ulst.ac.uk:8017/

3.  Digimap Launch!

This service is delivering Ordnance Survey Map Data in an innovative way for use by staff and students in all areas of teaching, learning and research.  Please see  http://edina.ed.ac.uk/digimap/index.html for more information.

DISSEMINATION

Readers may also be interested in a new, user-friendly approach to disseminating information about content provided by the JISC (and partner Research Councils).  You can find the Resource Guide for Social Sciences online at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/subject/socsci/   The advantage of these is that they provide a quick overview to resources in particular areas, and they describe the content rather than the service providers.

This data collection was created by Jan Broadway and Richard Cust, University of Birmingham, and Stephen Roberts, History of Parliament, to provide a calendar of all items in the Birmingham Reference Library's
collection of the official papers of the Lord Keeper Thomas Coventry (DV873-909) for use alongside Public Record Office sources for Chancery activities, and as a finding aid for individuals and grants within the
Patent Rolls.

The Virtual Heritage Network [VHN], is a new international organisation designed to promote the utilisation of technology for the education, interpretation, conservation and preservation of Natural, Cultural and World Heritage. The network is a physical and electronic network of people and organisations in many countries currently working in the virtual heritage industry.

Tuesday, 8 Feb 2000 History Data Service, Data Archive, University of Essex, New Study Number 3899

British Coal Mining Strikes, 1893-1940 (Study Number 3899)

This data collection which is now available from the History Data Service was created by Roy Church, School of Economic and Social Studies, University of East Anglia and Quentin Outram, School of Business and Economic Studies, University of Leeds. The data were originally gathered to form an empirical backdrop to theoretical work on wage bargaining and strike activity undertaken as doctoral research by Outram. The wealth of data encouraged Outram and Church to undertake a further project directly concerned to explain the causes of strike activity in the industry before the Second World War, the regional and inter-colliery in strike propensity, and the relation between strikes and social solidarity. The data collection was extended and partially re-coded for these purposes.

07 February 2000  Wellcome Library Hospital Records Database

We are pleased to announced that Hosprec, the joint Wellcome/Public Record Office Hospital Records Database, which has over 2800 entries, is now available for online searching by name and town, at http://hospitalrecords.pro.gov.uk/ and via the Wellcome Library website, http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/library.    The information in the database, which deals mainly with records in local authority or other record offices or administered by health authority archivists, includes what administrative  and clinical records survive, for what date-span, where they are held, and what finding aids are in existence, and historical and administrative details. The database is constantly being updated.
