This year FACHRS is enhancing the programme for those attending the conference with the incorporation of a walk around some of the York city-centre almshouses.
Meet 9.45 am in Exhibition Square outside the Art Gallery. [Location map]
On the Sunday morning following conference - the 13th May- a walk around the centre of York to see some of the city's almshouses will be led by Professor Ted Royle. Participants should assemble at 9.45 am in Exhibition Square outside the Art Gallery. The tour will include Sir Arthur Ingram's Hospital on Bootham [1632 but restored after Civil War damage]; Wandesford House ( The Old Maids Hospital) of 1743; Ann Middleton's Hospital [founded 1659] and the Terry Almshouses of 1899- both on Skeldergate. This leg of the walk should take around 90 minutes and ends not too far from the railway station; for those wanting more we can then go on to see the Lady Hewley Almshouses [1700, relocated 1839] and the Merchant Taylors almshouses of 1730 in Aldwark. This addition should take about another 45 minutes and ends up near the Minster, where St William's College ( home of medieval chantry priests) can be recommended for lunch
If you are planning to join in the tour it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes suitable for a prolonged walk, and to carry a small bottle of water for drinking.
York Art Gallery is in Exhibition Square, five minutes' from York Minster, next to Bootham Bar, the northern gateway on the city walls. It is about 15 to 20 minutes' walk from York Railway Station. The nearest car park is on Marygate, which is five minutes' walk and has 350 spaces. Marygate is off Bootham, the A19, which is the main road into York from the north.
