Archive Page - Workshop: Teaching British History with the Census
Teachers are invited to participate in a one-day workshop
to be held on Wednesday 24 October in the Computer Training Room at the
University of Manchester.
The census is an important source for anyone wanting to understand
nineteenth century Britain. The Contemporary and Historical Censuses
Collection (CHCC) Project involves a team of academics working to make
census materials more accessible via the World Wide Web. At the
University of Glasgow we are developing eight user-friendly units for
teachers and students of nineteenth century Britain which will be made
available on the web for use in further and higher education. The
materials we are creating will be authored by and designed in
consultation with teachers already making use of census material in
courses they teach. Suggestions for supplementary resources and case
studies illustrating possible uses of the material will be included.
This workshop offers an opportunity for history academics interested in
the project to find out about becoming involved in the project as
authors
and to have hands-on experience of model versions of the materials to be
produced.

The workshop has three aims:
(1) to identify historians interested in authoring or co-authoring the
eight units which we hope to produce by early next year. The topics
currently planned for those units are the census, migration, gender,
household and family structure, urbanisation, social status, and work
and employment, as well as a skills-based unit teaching database
manipulation, but views on other topics are welcome.
(2) to give history lecturers an opportunity to examine early versions
of two online pilot units prepared for the CHCC project, one about
nineteenth century migration, the other addressing the history of the
nineteenth century census itself. The units are student-centred and
activity-based, amenable to "mix 'n' match" by lecturers,
providing components which might take as little as a few minutes or as
long as a few hours. The focus is on teaching students about history,
but the units may also be used to teach students to manipulate census
datasets.
Digitised primary source material, including census data, will be
provided as part of the units. We would very much appreciate hearing
your reactions to the model we are developing.
(3) to obtain feedback about a step-by-step online interface which will
enable downloading of subsets of 1851 and 1881 census data for use in
the teaching units and for other research and educational purposes.
